Pune Police Arrest 22-Year-Old Domestic Help for Two Thefts, Recover ₹ 17 Lakh
Pune: The Yerawada police have arrested a 22-year-old woman from Koregaon in Satara district on charges of theft. The woman, who worked as a domestic help, allegedly stole valuables worth ₹13.3 lakh from her employer’s flat in Kalyaninagar on May 28 this year. Further investigations revealed her involvement in another theft worth ₹4 lakh reported in April by her former employer in the Bharati Vidyapeeth area.
In total, stolen valuables worth ₹17.1 lakh have been recovered from the accused. Senior Inspector Ravindra Shelke and Sub-Inspectors Swapnil Patil and Pradeep Surve arrested her last week after receiving a tip-off about her location.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman primarily targeted affluent families. She would seek employment as a maid and then steal valuables from their homes. In the most recent case, a businesswoman from Kalyaninagar lodged a theft complaint after the maid stole gold and silver jewelry from her cupboard and disappeared, keeping her phone switched off.
The employers had not taken her Aadhaar card or any other identification details, relying solely on her cellphone number. A Sub-Inspector stated, “We were searching for her, and one of our teams received a tip-off that she hailed from Koregaon in Satara district. Our team visited the village and nabbed her. We have recovered all stolen jewelry from her residence.”
Police also noted that the victims had not verified her background with local police stations before employing her but had hired her services directly through mutual friends
