A 26-year-old woman, Ambika Thakur, was arrested by the Hadapsar police on Thursday for illegally possessing and selling 170 vials of mephentermine sulphate injection, a synthetic sympathomimetic drug used to treat hypotension.

The police recovered 120 vials from Thakur’s residence in Malwadi and an additional 50 vials from a courier parcel. According to the police, Thakur was selling the sedative injections to youngsters in the Hadapsar area for Rs500 per vial, significantly higher than the market price of Rs334.

Sub-inspector Mahesh Kawale stated that Thakur procured the vials by placing orders on an online market application and intended to sell them to her friends and acquaintances for intoxication and quick profit. “She came up with the idea to sell sedative injections to get fast money,” Kawale added.

The police action was taken in the presence of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) officials. The FDA’s drug inspector revealed that mephentermine sulphate is a stimulant drug similar to amphetamine, often used by bodybuilders to increase muscle mass, and is highly addictive.

Thakur was produced before a magisterial court in Wanowrie, which ordered her custodial remand until December 30. The assistant public prosecutor, Aamrapali Kasture, argued that Thakur’s custodial interrogation was necessary to trace the source of the injections.
