Pune Police Arrest Key Accused In Symbiosis College Admission Scam
Pune Police’s Anti Narcotics Unit on Monday arrested a key accused involved in a major admission fraud case that used the Symbiosis Institute’s name and logo to deceive students. The accused, Kunal Kumar Birendra Kumar, was apprehended at Kolkata airport while attempting to flee to Thailand with his wife.
The case was registered on April 2, 2025, at Deccan Police Station after Divya, Akash Yadav, and Kunal Kumar were found running a fraudulent online scheme. They created a fake website resembling the official Symbiosis page, promising admissions to the reputed college and demanding lakhs of rupees in fees beyond the actual college charges. This scam targeted numerous students by luring them with false hopes of securing seats at Symbiosis.
Following the registration of the case, all three accused fled. Police teams pursued them relentlessly across Delhi, Haryana, and Maharashtra. Despite multiple searches, the suspects evaded capture until recently. A lookout notice was issued nationwide, and intensive investigations continued.
Kunal Kumar, aged 30 and originally from Bihar, has a prior criminal record linked to cyber frauds registered in Pune in 2021. His bail plea was rejected by the Pune Sessions Court, but he remained absconding until his recent arrest.
On May 31, based on credible intelligence about Kunal’s departure from Kolkata airport with his wife to Thailand, Pune Police Crime Branch teams set a trap and successfully arrested him.
Kunal Kumar is now in police custody, with further investigations underway under the supervision of Inspector Ulhas Kadam of the Anti Narcotics Unit . The operation was conducted under the guidance of senior police officials, including Addl Police Commissioner Pankaj Deshmukh, DCP Nikhil Pingale and others.
The police continue to search for the remaining accused and urge citizens to stay cautious against such fraudulent schemes.
