PUNE, July 30, 2025: In a major breakthrough, the Bharati Vidyapeeth police have arrested five individuals in connection with the kidnapping of a two-year-old girl from Katraj, exposing a suspected child trafficking and begging racket operating in the region.

The arrested suspects Sunil Bhosale, Shankar Pawar, Shalubai Kale, Ganesh Pawar, and Mangal Kale were apprehended from the Dharashiv district on Tuesday with the help of local authorities.

The case was reported on July 26, when a woman residing in the Wondercity slum area filed a complaint stating that one of her twin daughters had been abducted during the night by unidentified persons.

To trace the culprits, the police reviewed CCTV footage from 140 different cameras between Katraj and Pune Station. The surveillance footage helped investigators zero in on the accused, who were later tracked down in Dharashiv.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the abductors intended to exploit the child for begging purposes,” said Senior Police Inspector Rahulkumar Khilare of Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station. “However, further inquiries are underway to determine if the case is linked to a larger child trafficking network.”

The accused have been booked under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant sections of the Bombay Police Act. They have been remanded to police custody until August 2 as investigations continue.
