Pune Police Nab Two Women Snatching Gold Chain At Dagdusheth Ganpati Temple
Pune | May 6, 2025 — Two women were arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing a gold chain from a young girl at the iconic Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple in Pune. The temple, located on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road, is one of the city’s most visited and revered religious sites.
The suspects have been identified as Madhuri Santosh Dukale Ghadge, 23, and Kavya Tanvir Jadhav, 21, both residents of Yavat village in Pune district. According to the police, the incident occurred around 3 pm when a 26-year-old woman visited the temple with her minor daughter.
As the duo entered the queue for darshan, the two accused allegedly snatched a gold chain worth approximately ₹40,000 from the child. The mother raised an alarm, prompting other devotees nearby to intervene and catch the women. They were immediately handed over to the temple security personnel.
Officers from Vishrambaug police station arrived shortly after and arrested the two under section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Havaldar Ganesh Kate, the investigating officer, confirmed that the stolen chain was recovered. The accused have been remanded in police custody for one day as the investigation continues.
The Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple is not only a spiritual hub but also a site of high footfall, especially on weekends and holidays. It draws visits from dignitaries, celebrities, and lakhs of devotees. Given its prominence and large crowds, the temple is also marked as a sensitive location by security agencies.
