Pune Porsche Case: Teen To Be Tried As Juvenile After JJB Rejects Police Appeal
Pune, July 15, 2025: The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pune on Tuesday dismissed the city police’s application seeking permission to try the 17-year-old involved in the fatal Porsche Taycan crash as an adult. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of May 19, 2024, claimed the lives of two young IT professionals and sparked nationwide outrage after the minor was initially granted bail with conditions including writing a 300-word essay on traffic rules.
Citing a Supreme Court judgment, the JJB ruled that the offence does not qualify as “heinous” under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act. The board noted that crimes carrying a maximum sentence of over seven years, but no minimum sentence or a minimum sentence below seven years, cannot be classified as heinous under Section 2(33) of the Act.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ganesh Ingale confirmed the rejection of the police’s plea and said the detailed order is awaited.
The minor’s counsel, Prashant Patil, argued that as per the Supreme Court’s interpretation in XXX vs State of NCT of Delhi, the charges against the teen did not warrant trial as an adult. The JJB upheld this argument in its order.
This ruling comes more than a year after the incident triggered debates on juvenile crime and legal reforms across the country.
