Pune, June 18, 2025 — Me Punawalekar, a citizens forum representing residents of Punawale has formally submitted a letter to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), highlighting serious irregularities in ongoing civic development in Gaikwad Nagar. The complaint points to poor road construction, questionable streetlight installations, and lack of environmental planning, urging immediate action from civic authorities.
According to Sumit Dhage, roadwork from Pradeep Sweets to GK Aarcon appears inconsistent. While one part of the stretch is being constructed with a proper two-foot foundation, the remaining section has reportedly been hastily topped with a tar layer without sufficient base work. Despite PCMC officials claiming that a second layer will be added after the monsoon and that the work meets technical norms, residents have already observed early signs of potholes and damage.

“This kind of shortcut construction raises concerns about durability, especially with Punawale witnessing high vehicular movement and the onset of the monsoon,” Dhage stated.
Another resident Rohit Chodankar stated that PCMC has been doing a shoddy job. The entire stretch of road must be taken up with laying of drainage line, storm water line, cable ducts, beautification and adequate footpaths. This is one of the major roads citizens take for their workplace in Hinjawadi. Why are the taxpayers neglected so badly ?
The letter also emphasizes the need for thoughtful green planning. Dhage urged the civic body to plant native tree species along footpaths and road dividers, rather than decorative plants, citing the example of the Nigdi Pradhikaran area where indigenous greenery has enhanced both air quality and urban aesthetics.
Concerns have also been raised over newly installed streetlight poles near Eela Society, which Dhage alleges appear rusted and possibly reused. He demanded the installation of new, durable poles suitable for a developing residential locality.
The resident’s appeal includes the following key demands:
- Immediate inspection of road construction quality and consistency
- Use of a uniform and strong foundation for the entire stretch
- Plantation of native trees to improve environmental resilience
- Replacement of old or damaged streetlight poles with quality infrastructure
- Accountability from contractors and PCMC staff overseeing the projects
The letter, also marked to local MLA Shankar Jagtap and residents of affected societies, calls for urgent intervention to ensure that public funds are used efficiently and that civic amenities meet sustainable and safe standards.
This citizen-led initiative underscores growing public demand for quality urban infrastructure and greater transparency in execution.
