Pune: Reckless Driving And Lack Of Speed-Breakers At Parge Nagar In Kondhwa Leaves Young Biker Severely Injured
Pune: A senior citizen and two of his grandchildren were left severely injured in an accident that occurred on the evening of September 15 in Parge Nagar. According to local residents, the accident highlights the long-pending issues of inadequate road safety measures in the area, including the absence of speed breakers and proper streetlighting.
A street racing incident involving two bikers led to a serious accident in Kondhwa, injuring a 79-year-old man and his two young grandchildren.
The victim, Dr. Rashid Shaikh, was riding his two-wheeler with his granddaughters, Mariam Shaikh (7) and Faria Shaikh (9), when one of the racing bikers rammed into them. All three were rushed to National Hospital, Kondhwa. Doctors confirmed that Mariam and Faria sustained multiple fractures in their legs and underwent surgery late at night. Dr. Shaikh, who suffered a major fracture in his hand, is scheduled for surgery today.
Eyewitnesses reported that the biker lost control due to reckless speeding by other two-wheeler riders in the vicinity. The accident, they said, could have been prevented if speed breakers were installed to regulate vehicle movement. With poor lighting conditions after dusk, visibility is already low, making it dangerous for both pedestrians and motorists.
Residents of Parge Nagar have repeatedly raised concerns with the Pune City Traffic Police, demanding the installation of speed breakers, functional streetlights, and stricter enforcement against rash driving. Despite several appeals, they claim that no concrete action has been taken so far.
“The roads here are unsafe, especially for school-going children and elderly pedestrians. Vehicles zip through at high speeds, and the lack of lighting only adds to the risk. We have been requesting the authorities for years, but accidents keep happening,” said a local resident.
The injured biker was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is reported to be serious. The incident has once again sparked outrage among the community, with residents urging the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and traffic police to act immediately before more lives are endangered.
Police have registered a case against one of the bikers, identified as riding a Himalaya Bullet. Authorities suspect the accused is a juvenile. The residents warned that if their demands continue to be ignored, they may be forced to escalate their protest to ensure road safety measures are implemented in Parge Nagar.
