From Smart City to Green City: Pune Makes a Solar Friendship Pact
Pune, 13 August 2025 : Mahavitaran has achieved remarkable solar capacity of 1 GW under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enable domestic consumers to get free electricity and also generate income by selling excess power generated. On the eve of Independence Day, the rooftop solar power generation capacity of domestic consumers under this scheme in Maharashtra crossed the 1,000 MW mark.Â
For this achievement, Mahavitaran Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Lokesh Chandra has congratulated the electricity consumers, officers and employees of Mahavitaran, as well as the suppliers who installed rooftop solar power generation projects.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed to focus on the implementation of the scheme as this scheme launched by the Prime Minister will directly benefit the domestic consumers. Mahavitaran is implementing this scheme in the state. Launched by the Union Government in February 2024, the number of consumers in the state who have installed rooftop solar power generation projects has increased to more than 2.5 lakh in the last one and a half years, and their combined capacity has reached 1,000 MW or 1 GW. A subsidy of Rs 1,870 crore has been approved by the Union Government for these consumers.
Maharashtra has become the leading state in the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Minister of State for Energy Meghna Sakore Bordikar’s guidance has been important in the implementation of the scheme.
On August 15, i.e. Independence Day, awareness will be created across the country about the use of solar energy, and on the eve of it, electricity consumers in the state have crossed the 1,000 MW mark in terms of rooftop solar power generation capacity.
Nagpur district has secured first place in the state in the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijalee Yojana for installing rooftop solar power generation projects with 40,152 beneficiary consumers and 157 MW capacity. Nagpur district is followed by Pune (19,195 consumers and 89 MW capacity), Jalgaon (18,892 consumers and 70 MW capacity), Amravati (15,245 consumers and 63 MW capacity), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (16,664 consumers and 59 MW capacity) and Nashik (15,468 consumers and 55 MW capacity).
How to take advantage of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijalee Yojana scheme?
The beneficiaries of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana have crossed the 1,000 MW capacity mark in the state and other domestic electricity consumers and housing societies should also take advantage of this scheme, said Mahavitaran CMD Lokesh Chandra.

Power consumers receive direct subsidy from the central government for installing solar power generation projects on the roof. A project with a capacity of 1 KW gets a subsidy of Rs. 30,000, a project with a capacity of 2 KW gets a subsidy of Rs. 60,000, and a project with a capacity of 3 KW gets a subsidy of Rs. 78,000. Housing societies also get a subsidy of Rs. 18,000 per KW up to 500 KW. The solar power generation project installed on the roof generates electricity for the next 25 years.
This electricity generation meets the domestic needs of the consumer and the excess electricity can be sold to Mahavitaran.
