PUNE, July 23, 2025 — In response to a recent proposal to rename Mohammadwadi (Ward 62, PIN 411060) to “Mahadevwadi,” concerned residents of the locality have sent a formal letter to the Chief Minister, urging him to preserve the existing name and redirect administrative efforts towards pressing civic issues such as water supply and traffic management.

The letter, dated July 11, 2025, emphasizes the historical, cultural, and administrative importance of retaining the name “Mohammadwadi,” a title the area has proudly carried for decades. Residents stress that the name transcends religious boundaries and is a shared identity symbol for the entire community.

Key Points Highlighted in the Letter:

1. Historical and Cultural Significance:

The name Mohammadwadi has deep roots in Pune’s history and heritage. Residents argue that altering the name would erase a part of the city’s cultural identity, which has developed over generations.

2. Interfaith Harmony:

The locality is home to people from diverse religions and backgrounds. Maintaining the current name, the residents believe, supports peaceful coexistence and fosters communal trust, while a change may risk disturbing this delicate balance.

3. Administrative Challenges and Cost:

A name change would result in widespread complications — from updating voter rolls and land records to amending official addresses and business licenses. Residents warn that the financial and bureaucratic costs would be an unnecessary burden on the public exchequer.

 Citizen Demands:

* An inclusive discussion involving all community stakeholders before any decision is made.

* A public consultation process to ensure democratic and transparent action.

* A shift in priorities from symbolic changes to real civic issues such as irregular water supply, traffic congestion, and infrastructure development.

The residents have appealed for urgent intervention from the Chief Minister and requested an official response on the status of their plea. Many feel that the renaming move is being rushed without adequate public discourse, and they hope that their collective voice will be heard and respected.

As of now, the state administration has not issued an official response regarding the proposal or the residents’ objections.
