Pune Residents Protest Faulty Electricity Meters as Bills Double and Triple Despite No Rise in Usage
Residents across Pune are voicing concerns over malfunctioning electricity meters that have led to sudden spikes in their monthly bills. Many claim that despite no change in their power usage, their bills have nearly doubled or even tripled in recent months.
A resident near Nilayam Bridge said her bill, which earlier ranged between ₹400 and ₹700, has consistently crossed ₹1,000 in the last three months. “We haven’t increased our usage. Even after filing complaints, the issue persists. I’ve now applied for a meter replacement,” she said.
Another resident from Gangadham reported a similar experience, with bills jumping from ₹700–₹800 to nearly ₹3,000. “When I raised the issue, the staff behaved rudely. It doesn’t feel fair,” he said.
Others complain that even newly installed meters have failed to resolve the problem. “We were told the old meter was faulty, but the new one also gives inflated readings. It feels like the system is designed to overcharge us,” one resident said.
In response, a spokesperson from the electricity company clarified that each division has a dedicated lab where consumers can get their meters tested if they suspect inaccurate readings.
