A disturbing incident of road rage has shaken the residents of Kharadi, one of Pune’s prominent IT hubs. Indranil Sinha, a local professional, was assaulted by a group of men after his car unintentionally splashed water on a parked scooter on the Kharadi-Hadapsar bypass.

According to Sinha, the incident occurred on December 11, 2024, around 8:30 PM, as he was returning home from his office. He attempted to navigate cautiously on the narrow and poorly maintained road, but his car rolled over a deep pothole, causing a small splash that hit the parked scooter.

This seemingly minor incident triggered the aggression of a group of men nearby, who chased Sinha’s vehicle and stopped him further down the road. Despite his attempts to explain that the splash was unintentional, the men refused to listen and demanded money from him.

When Sinha refused to comply, the confrontation escalated, and one of the men kicked his car, leaving a dent, before fleeing the scene. Sinha promptly reported the incident to the police, providing the scooter’s registration number as evidence.

However, he expressed frustration over the lack of action by law enforcement. “The vehicle’s insurance has been expired since 2012, but the police refused to issue any challan or take action,” he said.

This incident has reignited conversations around road safety and police accountability in Pune. Road safety activist Prateek Singh took to Twitter to narrate Sinha’s ordeal, highlighting the twin challenges of poor infrastructure and public safety in the city.

The incident has raised concerns among residents and activists alike, who are calling for improved road maintenance and enhanced police response to such incidents. As Sinha noted, such incidents are alarmingly common in the Kharadi area, and it is high time that the authorities take concrete steps to address these concerns.
