Pune RTO Launches Campaign to Curb Underage Driving, Strict Penalties Announced
The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a special initiative in the city aimed at stopping underage students from driving on public roads. Officials have stated that if these young drivers are caught operating vehicles without a license and violating traffic regulations, legal action will be taken against their parents.
Surprise inspections are being carried out by teams near colleges and coaching centers throughout the city, according to RTO officials.
If an underage driver is identified during this campaign, their parents or the vehicle owner could face a prison sentence of up to 3 years, along with a fine of ₹25,000.
The campaign, which began on December 13, is being led by regional transport officer Archana Gaikwad. Gaikwad emphasized that strict measures will be enforced against vehicle owners or parents as the initiative continues for the next 15 days. Swapnil Bhosale, the deputy regional transport officer at Pune RTO, mentioned, “We have initiated this special campaign to prevent accidents caused by underage drivers. Strict action will be taken against the parents or vehicle owners of minor drivers found during this campaign.”
