Pune Sees Major Overhaul Of Speed Breakers To Enhance Road Safety
In a significant move to improve road safety, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has removed over 250 unscientific speed breakers across the city. This initiative, carried out over the last two weeks, aims to address concerns over unscientific road design and traffic hazards .
The PMC identified 600 speed breakers that failed to meet the Indian Road Congress (IRC) norms. These non-compliant speed breakers posed safety risks to commuters, prompting the corporation to take swift action.
According to Sahebrao Dandge, an official from the PMC road department, the removed speed breakers will be replaced with new ones that adhere to the required standards. This drive has been undertaken in coordination with ward offices to ensure a seamless transition.
IRC guidelines stipulate that speed humps should not exceed 10 cm in height to prevent vehicle damage. Additionally, urban areas should have a recommended speed limit of 30 km/h. A recent PMC survey revealed that several speed bumps failed to meet these standards, leading to safety concerns.
The removal of unscientific speed breakers is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents. The PMC’s efforts to enhance road safety are ongoing, with plans to replace the removed speed breakers with compliant ones in the near future.
