Pune Sees Relief from Scorching Heat as Temperatures Drop; Rain Likely Till May 12
IMD issues yellow alert for light showers; thunderstorms briefly sweep through city areas
After days of intense heat, Pune has finally received some relief as temperatures dipped significantly over the past two days. The maximum temperature fell from 37.2°C to 32.8°C, and officials say cooler days may continue, thanks to weather systems triggering rainfall and cloud cover across Maharashtra.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD):
- Pune recorded 22.3°C as the minimum temperature, which is within the normal range.
- Cloudy skies and light rain are expected in the city until May 12, with a yellow alert issued for May 11 and 12.
- Thunderstorm activity was reported briefly in areas like Sus Goan, Hadapsar, Fursungi, and Kothrud on Thursday, but no further rain is expected overnight.
Why the Sudden Change?
Meteorologists explained that the cooler spell is due to:
- An upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest and northwest Madhya Pradesh.
- Multiple trough systems stretching across central India.
- These systems are pushing moisture and cooler air into Maharashtra, resulting in rain and reduced daytime heat.
While Pune and other districts are expected to remain relatively cool till May 12, the IMD warns that temperatures could rise again after May 15, marking a return to pre-monsoon heat.
