Pune Sees Sharp Rise In Diwali Fire Incidents, 60 Cases Reported In 2023
Pune: A significant increase in fire-related incidents marked Diwali celebrations in Pune this year, with the city’s fire brigade responding to 60 fires between October 28 and November 3. This represents a substantial rise compared to previous years, with 35 cases reported in 2023, 19 in 2022, and 21 in 2021.
The majority of incidents were recorded on Laxmi Puja day, November 1, with 36 fires reported across residential areas, open spaces, godowns, and shops. On Diwali Padwa, November 2, an additional 14 incidents were reported, followed by four more cases on November 3.
Pune’s older Peth areas experienced the highest concentration of incidents, although fire department officials confirmed that no major injuries were reported.
“We were well-prepared and had fire brigade vehicles stationed across all 20 fire stations in the city,” said Devendra Potphode, Chief Fire Officer of Pune Municipal Corporation. “Public announcements on preventive safety measures helped manage the situation. While incidents increased, there were no major emergencies or injuries.”
