Pune: Shewalewadi Bus Depot Lacks Security, Poses Major Safety Risks

Pune: The Shewalewadi bus depot, located on the Pune-Solapur highway near Hadapsar, has become a major safety concern due to unsecured buses, poor lighting, and inadequate facilities. Several scrapped and contract buses remain unattended overnight, creating an unsafe environment, especially for women passengers.

Neglected Facilities and Security Gaps

The 7.5-acre bus depot is used by thousands of passengers daily, including workers and students. However, the lack of basic amenities and security has raised alarms. Former corporator Yogesh Sasane, who inspected the site, pointed out several critical issues:

  • Only one security guard is deployed at night, making the area vulnerable.
  • Insufficient lighting across the premises increases the risk of incidents.
  • Water shortage—the only 2,000-liter tank runs out by 7 AM.
  • Poor toilet facilities—a single three-seater toilet in an unhygienic condition discourages both men and women from using it.
  • Unsecured buses—parked buses can be accessed easily due to lack of monitoring, creating opportunities for illegal activities.

Alleged Illegal Activities at Night

Raising further concerns, Sasane highlighted reports of illicit activities occurring in the dark, abandoned spaces around the depot. He alleged that the lack of security and poor lighting has turned the depot into a hotspot for prostitution and other unlawful activities. Additionally, unattended travel buses brought to the depot by the police remain unchecked, posing further risks.

Urgent Measures Required

To ensure commuter safety, authorities must take immediate action, including:

  • Removing scrapped and abandoned buses to prevent misuse.
  • Securing all parked buses by locking doors and windows.
  • Deploying additional security personnel and improving CCTV surveillance.
  • Installing proper lighting and maintaining cleanliness at the depot.

Passengers have urged the transport department to address these issues on priority to prevent future mishaps and improve safety conditions at Pune’s bus depots.
