Pune: Shivajinagar Bus Station Project Set for Completion in Three Years
The long-delayed Shivajinagar bus station project in Pune is finally set to move forward. The Maharashtra government has directed Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) to complete the project within three years. The temporary bus depot at Wakdewadi, currently in use, will also be returned to the Dairy Development Department after the project’s completion.
The Pune Metro project required part of the land owned by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) for the construction of an underground metro station at Shivajinagar. In December 2019, one acre of MSRTC’s four-acre plot was leased to Maha-Metro. This led to the relocation of the Shivajinagar bus depot to Wakdewadi, a few kilometers away. The Wakdewadi land is under the Dairy Development Department.
The new Shivajinagar bus station will be equipped with modern amenities to enhance passenger convenience and MSRTC operations. The project will include:
- – A modern bus station
- – A bus depot for parking and maintenance
- – Parking facilities for commuters
- – Staff quarters for MSRTC employees
A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared, and a tender for the construction will be issued soon.
The temporary relocation of the depot to Wakdewadi along the Pune-Mumbai highway has caused increased traffic congestion. The depot’s return to Shivajinagar is expected to ease the traffic pressure on this busy road, improving conditions for daily commuters.
