Pune: Split PMC For Better Governance: Ex-Mayors And Officials Propose
Pune, July 14, 2025: The demand to divide the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) into two separate municipal bodies is growing stronger, as several former city leaders and office bearers came together to deliberate on the issue.
During a brainstorming session held in Pune, former mayors, deputy mayors, standing committee chairpersons, and Zilla Parishad presidents from across political parties discussed the challenges posed by PMC’s increasing jurisdiction. They highlighted how, despite the consistent inclusion of new villages in PMC limits since its establishment in 1950, there has been no proportional growth in staff, civic amenities, or infrastructure. Many of the newly merged villages are now facing neglect, leading to rising discontent among residents.
The participants reached a consensus to send a joint proposal to the state government seeking the division of PMC for better governance and service delivery.
Key leaders who attended the session included Prashant Jagtap, Rajlakshmi Bhosale, Sanjay Balgude, Shrikant Shirole, Jaalindar Kamthe, Ashwini Kadam, Nita Pardeshi, Shiva Mantri, Virendra Kirad, Narendra Vyavhare, Aba Bagul, Subhash Jagtap, Ujwal Keskar, Nitin Kadam, Pravin Tupe, among others.
The leaders emphasized the urgent need for the state government to consider the proposal in view of the growing administrative challenges in the expanded municipal areas.
