Pune: SPPU Introduces ‘Carry Forward’ Policy for 2025-26 After Student Protests
Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has announced the implementation of a special ‘Carry Forward’ policy for the academic year 2025-26, allowing students with academic backlogs to progress to the next year.
The decision follows months of protests led by engineering students and various student organisations, demanding relief for those who risked losing an entire year due to one or more pending subjects. As per the new policy, students from all streams who appeared for the winter 2024 and summer 2025 exams but failed in certain subjects will be provisionally promoted to the next academic year.
Provisional admissions will be subject to conditions, including completing all academic requirements and clearing pending subjects by the winter 2025-26 examination. Those failing to meet these conditions will have their admissions cancelled without any refund of fees.

Akshay Jain, president of the media department of Youth Congress, welcomed the move, saying, “Our fight for student’s rights has finally succeeded today. The struggle proves that unity and persistent efforts always bring change.”
The university has clarified that this is a one-time measure for the 2025-26 academic year and will not serve as a precedent for future sessions.
