Pune: State Of Boxing In Maharashtra Alarming, Says Aijaz Hussain; Demands Probe into MBA's Functioning
Pune, April 17, 2025: Boxing in Maharashtra is facing a major setback due to poor management and internal disputes within the Maharashtra Boxing Association (MBA), said sports activist Aijaz Hussain in a press note. He plans to meet the Chief Minister and demand an enquiry into the alleged irregularities in the functioning of the Association.
Hussain pointed out that many young athletes from poor backgrounds take up boxing not only out of passion but also to secure government jobs under the sports quota and gain academic benefits. However, the mismanagement within MBA is reportedly crushing the dreams of these budding talents.
The MBA, which is supposed to be the guiding body for boxing in the state, currently stands dissolved due to infighting, political games, and legal battles. A temporary Review Committee is now handling its responsibilities, but Hussain alleges that it only shares information and takes no real action to support athletes.
He highlighted that the Association’s role is to train and provide the best facilities to boxers so they can perform well at national levels. However, lack of proper planning, poor travel arrangements, inadequate sporting infrastructure, and last-minute competitions have become the norm.
This mismanagement is especially evident in the upcoming National Youth Boxing Championship scheduled in Greater Noida from April 20, 2025. While the last dates for Maharashtra’s entries were April 15 and 17, the state-level trials were hurriedly arranged from April 15 to 17 in Yavatmal, leaving boxers scrambling at the last minute.
Hussain, along with parents, coaches, and supporters of the sport, has appealed to the Maharashtra government and the Sports Minister to intervene. He urged authorities to take immediate steps to improve the situation and protect the future of young boxers in the state.
