Pune: Strict Orders For Dealers To Share Second-Hand Vehicle Data With Police
Pune, July 18, 2025: In Pune’s rural areas, dealers engaged in the purchase and sale of second-hand vehicles have been directed to submit details of all vehicles bought and sold to the local police station.
The orders have been issued by Additional District Magistrate. Failure to comply will invite penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as mentioned in the directive.
The rural district has seen a rapid rise in urban settlements, leading to increased transactions in used motorcycles and vehicles.
However, the lack of proper records for these transactions has raised concerns about stolen vehicles being bought and sold by criminals. This hampers the investigation of crimes involving such vehicles.
As a precautionary measure, the directive mandates that dealers must provide details—including vehicle number, engine and chassis numbers, name and permanent/current address of the original owner, contact number, identity proof, RC and TC books, as well as details of the buyer—every seven days to the local police station. The order will remain in force for the next two months.
