Pune: Swatantryaveer Savarkar's Historic Room At Fergusson College To Be Open For Public Viewing On May 28
The room at Pune’s Fergusson College, once occupied by Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, will be open for public viewing on the occasion of his birth anniversary this Wednesday, May 28, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Savarkar stayed in this room between 1902 and 1905 during his student years. He lived in Room No. 17 of Hostel No. 1. This room stands as a witness to his revolutionary ideas and activities.
The room houses Savarkar’s bust, two ceremonial robes from his D.Litt. degree, personal belongings, and rare photographs. It was in this room that Savarkar planned many key revolutionary activities, including the burning of foreign clothes, the launch of the Swadeshi movement, and the founding of the revolutionary organization ‘Abhinav Bharat’. He also composed notable poems like “Sinhagadacha Powada” and “Bajiprabhu Deshpande” here.
In 1905, after the incident of burning foreign clothes, then Principal Wrangler Paranjape expelled Savarkar from the hostel and fined him. In protest, Lokmanya Tilak wrote an article titled “He Amche Guru Navhe” (“He is Not Our Teacher”) in the ‘Kesari’ newspaper.
The Deccan Education Society has preserved the room, and it is opened to the public on Savarkar’s birth and death anniversaries. This historic space continues to inspire as a testimony to his revolutionary journey.
