In a shocking incident, two men, including a 28-year-old software engineer, fell prey to parcel frauds, collectively losing Rs 16.48 lakh. The incidents occurred between August and September this year, with separate cases registered with Chatushrungi and Kalepadal police.
According to the complaint filed by the 28-year-old techie, he received a call from an unknown person claiming to be a senior official of a prominent courier company. The caller informed him that a parcel containing drugs, passports, and laptops was being sent to Iran in his name. To clear his name, the victim was asked to get a police clearance certificate, which led to a series of events that resulted in him transferring Rs 10 lakh to a bank account in Tamil Nadu.
In another case, a 49-year-old employee of a private company lost Rs 6.48 lakh to cyber crooks who claimed that his Aadhaar details were being used for money laundering and drug dealing purposes. The victim was made to transfer the amount to various banks in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
