Pune: Three Suspected GBS Cases Confirmed, Bacterial Infection Due To Water LikelyÂ

Pune Cable Duct Scam Allegations: Complaint Filed, Legal Action ThreatenedÂ
Pune: Two suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) admitted at Poona Hospital tested positive for Campylobacter jejuni bacterial infection, while a third patient showed a mixed infection of Campylobacter jejuni and E. coli, raising alarm over water contamination in the Sinhagad Road area.
The infected individuals include a 27-year-old and a 37-year-old from Manik Baug, Sinhagad Road, currently admitted to the hospital’s ICU. Lab tests confirmed Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria often linked to poultry and animal feces, as the cause. This bacterium is known to trigger GBS, a rare neurological disorder.
A third case, a 55-year-old woman from Sinhagad Road, was diagnosed with both Campylobacter jejuni and E. coli, which can also lead to GBS.
There is a need to examine water supplies in Sinhagad Road, Dhayari, and Kirkatwadi for contamination. Reports suggest that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) water supply in Kirkatwadi may lack proper hygiene, with tanker-supplied water being only partially treated, potentially contributing to the outbreak.
The situation underscores the importance of stringent water quality monitoring to prevent further cases.
