Pune: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has announced plans to construct smart, informative, and climate-resilient bus stops across Pune, modeled after those in Delhi. These new bus stops will not only serve as shelters but will also provide essential information for commuters.

In an effort to enhance passenger convenience during the monsoon and summer seasons, PMPML is focusing on building commuter-centric infrastructure. As part of this initiative, a PMPML delegation will soon visit Delhi to study its smart bus stop system. A discussion regarding this project has already taken place between the PMPML chairman and the Pune Municipal Commissioner.

PMPML aims to improve public transport services by creating modern and intelligent bus stops that provide real-time information and comfort to passengers. These smart bus shelters are expected to make travel smoother for Pune residents.

Study of the “Delhi Pattern”

Under this ambitious plan, the first phase proposes the construction of around 1,700 new bus stops across the city. These will be built under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. The visiting team will assess the structure, design, and features of Delhi’s bus stops to implement a similar model in Pune.

Features of Delhi-Style Bus Stops

Delhi’s modern bus stops are equipped with:

  • Digital display boards
  • CCTV surveillance
  • Passenger information panels
  • Dedicated space for public awareness messages
  • Designs ensuring women’s safety

PMPML plans to incorporate these very features into Pune’s upcoming bus shelters.

Currently, the condition of several bus stops in Pune is substandard. Instead of renovating traditional stops, PMPML has decided to transition toward these smart alternatives. Work on the new bus stop design, inspired by Delhi’s successful model, is already underway.
