Pune To Get Two New Vehicle Scrapping Centers, Set To Open In 2-3 Months
The state transport department is set to approve two vehicle scrapping centers in Pune, which are expected to begin operations within the next two to three months. This initiative comes after the 2021 national vehicle scrapping policy, which aimed to establish state-approved scrapping facilities. However, in Maharashtra, only three out of the planned twelve centers have been established, located in Jalna district and Nagpur.
Vivek Bhimanwar, the state transport commissioner, confirmed the forthcoming launch of the Pune centers. “Two centers have been identified in Pune. The process of vehicle scrapping will be initiated within 2-3 months,” he said.
Deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosle noted that no formal communication had been received from the transport department yet but assured that the new centers would be monitored by the RTO. “Anyone wanting to scrap his or her vehicle will get a 10% tax concession on the new vehicle,” Bhosle stated.
Another RTO official acknowledged the public’s reluctance to scrap their vehicles, pointing out concerns about the reliability of scrapping processes and the potential misuse of old vehicles. “Currently, the number of people coming to the RTO to scrap their vehicles is low. People have several apprehensions, including whether the scrapping centers will do a correct job and whether their old vehicles won’t be used for ulterior purposes. With the government-approved centers, there will be full monitoring of the whole scrapping process,” the official explained.
The RTO official further emphasized the environmental benefits of scrapping old vehicles, particularly commercial ones over 15 years old, which are mandated to be scrapped. Private vehicle owners, while not mandated, are encouraged to scrap their old vehicles or opt for re-registration with a green tax for another five years.
“People should come forward to scrap their old vehicles and refrain from using them due to environmental issues. With the opening of these two centers, we will ensure that they are well advertised and maintained,” the RTO official added.
