Pune To Launch Eco-Friendly Facility For Textile Waste Management

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to introduce its first dedicated textile waste processing unit to address the growing issue of textile waste in the city. The facility, a first-of-its-kind initiative, aims to handle the 100 to 125 tonnes of textile waste generated daily in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Currently, Pune produces approximately 1,200 to 1,300 tonnes of dry waste and 900 to 1,000 tonnes of wet waste daily. While the PMC has established biogas plants and dry waste processing facilities, managing textile waste—about 10% of the total dry waste—remains a significant challenge. Items like mattresses, cushions, clothes, furniture materials, and leather products require specialized processing due to their unique properties.

According to Sandip Kadam, head of PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department, textile waste often disrupts regular waste processing systems. “This waste cannot be compressed or processed with standard dry waste methods, as it clogs feeder conveyors and halts operations,” he explained.

The proposed unit will provide an eco-friendly solution, ensuring that textile waste is processed without harming the environment. “Most people overlook the environmental impact of textile waste. This facility will change that,” Kadam added.

The PMC is finalizing a location for the plant, pending approval from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The project, estimated to cost between ₹3 to ₹4 crore, is expected to receive a tender later this month.

This initiative is part of PMC’s broader efforts to improve waste management as the city’s population grows and waste volumes rise. The facility is a critical step toward creating a sustainable solution for Pune’s increasing textile waste burden.
