Pune Traffic Police's AI Pilot Spots 3,949 Violations In 2 Months, Slashes Repeat Offences To 1%
Pune, August 12, 2025: Pune City Police have launched a pilot project using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect and penalise traffic violations, aiming to enhance road discipline and reduce congestion.
Acting on the recommendations of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjankumar Sharma, the Additional Commissioner of Police (East) and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) explored the use of mobile applications, AI-enabled cameras, and portable devices for traffic enforcement.
In collaboration with Vijay Khobse, Director of SenSen Networks, the pilot project began on May 28, 2025, along Fergusson College Road (FC Road). The AI-powered cameras automatically recorded traffic violations without human intervention.
Over the past two months, the system detected 3,949 offences, including:
- 1,335 cases of no-parking
- 1,886 cases of double parking
- 719 instances of wrong-side driving
- 42 triple-riding cases
- 9 cases of using mobile phones while driving
Police reported that only 1% of offenders were repeat violators, indicating a significant deterrent effect. The initiative has improved traffic discipline and eased congestion in the area.
Encouraged by the results, Pune Traffic Police plan to extend the system across the city. Patrol vehicles will be equipped with AI cameras capable of tracking violations during rounds and issuing e-challans in real time, expanding monitoring beyond fixed camera locations, particularly on high-violation routes.
The project aims to reduce human intervention, boost police efficiency, and ensure smoother traffic movement. Additional benefits include:
- Greater efficiency through public cooperation via a mobile app
- Evidence-based enforcement
- Faster, stricter action, reducing disputes between police and citizens
If the pilot continues to succeed, AI cameras will be installed on all patrol vehicles and integrated into the upcoming Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) proposed to the government.
This initiative forms part of Pune Police’s broader plan to modernise operations and enhance road safety.
