Pune: Two Unknown Men Booked For Assaulting Woman Journalist During Ganpati Immersion Procession
Pune, September 8, 2025: Pune Police have registered a case against two unidentified men after a woman intern journalist working with Punekar News was allegedly harassed and assaulted during Ganpati procession coverage at Budhwar Chowk.
According to the FIR registered at Faraskhana Police Station (Crime Register No. 173/2025), the incident occurred on September 6, 2025, between 7:15 pm and 7:40 pm. The 20-year-old complainant, a student, was reporting on the Ganpati immersion procession along with her friend.
As per the complaint, a member of the Trital Dhol-Tasha Pathak pushed a heavy iron trolley wheel on the complainant’s foot. When she questioned him, the accused allegedly pushed her, shoved her back, and misbehaved, causing her distress. When her friend intervened, he too was pushed aside. Another member of the troupe reportedly manhandled both the complainant and her friend while hurling abuses.
Based on her complaint, the police have booked two unknown accused under Sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 75(1) (sexual harassment), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is being led by Police Sub-Inspector Punam Patil. The investigation is being led by PSI Poonam Patil of Faraskhana Police Station.
Meanwhile, the incident was brought to the notice of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Sunday by the Punekar News team. The matter was also discussed with Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma and DCP (Zone 1) Krushikesh Rawale.
The Pune Union of Working Journalists (PUWJ) has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, highlighting this incident along with other difficulties faced by journalists while covering Ganeshotsav in the city.
