Pune: Unauthorized dumping continues in Autadewadi Lake near Undri
14 June 2024
Pune- There is unauthorized dumping taking place near Autadewadi Lake in Undri. The residents of Undri have taken to X, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to voice their concerns. The residents fear if the dumping goes on for a prolonged period, the Lake, a beautiful natural resource, will be turned into another dump yard for the area.
They have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde, the newly appointed MP for the Pune Lok Sabha Constituency Murlidhar Mohol as well as MP Supriya Sule to take cognizance of the matter and take immediate action to stop the unauthorized dumping.
Unauthorised dumping going on near the Autadewadi Lake in Undri. @PMCPune please take a cognisance of this else we will loose the lake for ever to create a brand new dump yard for the area. @punekarnews @pulse_pune @CMOMaharashtra @mohol_murlidhar @supriya_sule pic.twitter.com/3s60JMjQqB

Speaking to a resident of Godrej Prana situated near the lake she said, “The dumping has become a regular activity now and every morning we see a tractor filled with trash approaching the lake and dumping garbage there. We tried complaining through the PMC Care Portal but it showed that the area was unserviceable. By the time we go to the PMC office and get their attention, the dumping will become a huge problem, therefore, we posted on X as a last resort”.
“Apart from the frequent dumping, we are also facing encroachment issues near the lake and sometimes we also see people coming there to drink and it is becoming a hassle to maintain cleanliness around the lake. We have approached a few officials but no one has taken up the responsibility mainly due to jurisdiction issues. We, as residents, are trying relentlessly to make the condition better whether it is by planting trees, setting up security fences, or conducting clean-up activities but there is a limit to what we can do. If dumping continues on a large scale, even we won’t be able to do something about it. Officials can at least put up a board near the lake saying it’s a preserved site”, expressed another resident.
Undri, one of the latest villages in PMC has a man-made lake next to Godrej Prana and Tata Inora society, Undri. However, the lake has become a dumping spot for a while and is also facing encroachment issues. Spread across 10 acres of area, this can be an excellent source of water to the nearby societies when facing acute water shortage. This issue surfaced last year as well wherein the environment officer of PMC, Mangesh Dighe, had mentioned that the lake had not been handed over to them and that conducting studies related to various aspects of the lake was important before taking any step.
