Pune: Urgent Safety Measures Needed On DP Road Near Mhatre Bridge As Accidents Continue To Risk Lives
Frequent and serious accidents on the DP Road between Rajaram Bridge and Mhatre Bridge in Pune have raised deep concerns among residents. The lack of traffic control and high vehicle speeds have turned this busy stretch into a danger zone, especially for children and residents from nearby schools and housing societies.
Vehicles regularly zip past at speeds of 80–90 km/h, making it extremely unsafe for pedestrians. The situation is especially alarming given the presence of schools and residential areas along this stretch. Just last week, a severe accident left one individual with a major leg injury—yet another grim reminder of the risks involved.
Citizens living in adjacent colonies often cross this road to reach workplaces or schools located on the opposite side. Without any safe crossing infrastructure, every trip is a gamble with life. Locals strongly believe that a pedestrian bridge or safe crossing points would drastically reduce the danger, especially for students.
Currently, there are no speed limit signs, traffic signals, or surveillance cameras installed on this stretch. There is also no enforced speed regulation. Experts and residents agree that if the road passes through an urban area, the speed limit should be set between 30–50 km/h, and reduced to 20–30 km/h near schools and hospitals.
Local citizens are now urging municipal corporators and MLAs to intervene. Immediate action is needed to implement speed limits, install signage, traffic signals, and pedestrian infrastructure to prevent further tragedies on DP Road.
