Pune: Vadgaon Sheri Residents Launch Mega Cleanliness Drive To Tackle Chronic Garbage Issue
Pune, September 12, 2025:
Tired of living amid mounting garbage despite repeated complaints, residents of Wadgaon Sheri have decided to take charge of their neighbourhood’s cleanliness. On September 14, they will carry out a large-scale drive along the Konark–Windsor Estate stretch, deploying tractor-trailers, labourers, volunteers, banners, and cleaning tools to clear pavements and lanes that have been choked with waste for months.
The decision was taken during a meeting at Nyati Meadows Clubhouse, where residents mapped cleaning routes, assigned responsibilities, and planned a coordinated effort. Teams will inspect chronic dumping points, rake, sweep, scrape, and disinfect pavements to ensure long-lasting results.
Earlier, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out two major clean-up interventions in the area, but the relief was short-lived as garbage continued to pile up near Nyati Meadows, Windsor Estate, and St Arnold’s. Officials blamed residents for neglecting door-to-door garbage collection and discarding waste on the roads. The civic body has now promised stricter monitoring and frequent drives.
Team members will interact with residents, encouraging them to hand over garbage to SWaCH and avoid throwing waste on the streets. They also want to understand the difficulties households face in disposing of waste.
To ensure community participation, posters have been put up across shops, awareness messages are circulating on WhatsApp groups, and volunteers will encourage citizens to practice waste segregation. Residents also plan to mark World Cleanliness Day on September 20 with a campaign promoting “no litter,” “no plastic,” and regular use of SWaCH services.
Managing logistics for the event, Rajan Vishwanathan added, “We’re pooling funds, hiring trailers, and arranging gloves and tools. This drive is about reclaiming our space and creating a citizen-driven model for Wadgaon Sheri.”
