Pune Weather: Rain Intensifies In Ghat Areas; IMD Issues Orange Alert For Midweek
After two days of subdued showers, rainfall activity surged in the ghat regions of Pune district over the past 24 hours, ending at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Tamhini recorded 92 mm of rain, a significant rise from 11 mm noted on Saturday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the ghat areas of Pune under an orange alert for Wednesday and Thursday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert is also in effect for Monday and Tuesday across Pune’s ghats, northern and western Maharashtra, as well as Vidarbha.

Other ghat regions reported increased rainfall, with Bhira and Dungerwadi receiving 53 mm each, Davdi 48 mm, Shirgaon 30 mm, Bhor 15 mm, and Kuruvande 9.5 mm. Lonavla too saw a slight uptick from 4 mm on Saturday to 8 mm on Sunday.
In contrast, Pune city remained largely dry. No rainfall was recorded in Shivajinagar, Pashan, Chinchwad, and NDA. Minor showers were reported at Lavale (1.5 mm), Lohegaon (0.6 mm), and Koregaon Park (3.5 mm).
Rainfall is expected to intensify in the coming days across Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and Satara districts, which are now under an orange alert for Tuesday.
“Between July 20 and 26, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra. Light to moderate showers are expected in several regions over the next five days,” an IMD official said.
The monsoon trough remains active with several weather systems influencing rainfall. While Panshet and Temghar dams recorded minimal showers (1 mm and 2 mm respectively), Khadakwasla and Varasgaon reported none. The four major dams supplying water to Pune city currently hold 22.99 TMC, about 78.87% of their combined capacity.
