Pune Weather Update: December Sees Higher Average Temperatures Compared To Past Three YearsÂ
Pune, January 2, 2025: Pune witnessed a distinctive December this year, marked by fluctuating winter intensity due to the interplay of cold winds from the north and moisture-laden winds from the south. These variations resulted in a higher average minimum temperature compared to the past three years.
The month began with mild winter conditions, giving Pune residents a mix of weather patterns. Cyclone Fengal’s impact brought humid winds from the south, temporarily reducing the chill. However, as the cyclone dissipated, cold winds from the north reintroduced winter’s bite. During this period, temperatures dropped to as low as 6–8°C, recording the season’s lowest so far.
December Average Minimum Temperatures:
- 2024: 14.9°C
- 2023: 14.3°C
- 2022: 14.4°C
- 2021: 14.4°C
Following this cold spell, temperatures rose again, leading to warmer days with occasional light rain in some areas. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the average minimum temperature for December this year was recorded at 14.9°C, higher than the 14.3°C in 2023 and 14.4°C in 2022. In comparison, the decade’s lowest December temperature was recorded in 2013 at 11.1°C, while 2019 saw the highest at 16.7°C.
Meteorologist S.D. Sanap attributed the higher average temperature to multiple factors, including Cyclone Fengal, which brought cloudy weather and warmer southern winds for nearly ten days. “This led to higher minimum temperatures for most of the month, although sharp dips in temperatures during certain days brought a brief winter experience,” Sanap explained.
Despite the fluctuations, December offered a mix of chill and warmth, reflecting the region’s dynamic weather patterns and emphasizing the impact of global climatic changes.
