Pune: When Will PMC Resolve The Plight Of Undri Residents?
A tragic accident claimed the life of Dr. Pranali Date, a 34-year-old doctor, yesterday afternoon when a speeding truck struck her bike and ran over her in Undri. The incident has sent shockwaves across Undri and brought the dire state of local infrastructure into sharp focus once again.
The accident occurred on a key road connecting Katraj to Saswad, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Despite rapid development in Undri, the area remains plagued by a lack of basic infrastructure. Since its merger into PMC in 2017, Undri still awaits a comprehensive Development Plan. Two elections have passed without any significant infrastructure projects being initiated, leaving residents grappling with issues such as inadequate water supply, missing drainage systems, poor road conditions, lack of healthcare facilities, and no playgrounds or community halls.
Undri is home to over 200 residential societies with average around 10,000 families and 13 renowned schools, attracting families seeking better futures for their children. However, these families face daily struggles, including reliance on water tankers, persistent traffic congestion, and a lack of civic amenities—all while paying substantial property taxes.
Major traffic bottlenecks in the area include:
- Kad Nagar
- Undri Chowk
- Handewadi Signal
- Ambekar Hotel
- Mohammadwadi Chowk
- Palace Orchard Society Chowk
- Marvel Sangria Chowk
- NIBM Annexe
- Krishna Nagar
Undri’s neighboring area, Mohammadwadi, was merged with PMC in 1997, but even after decades, it continues to face challenges with basic facilities like water supply. The residents of Undri feel abandoned, voicing frustration over PMC’s lack of responsiveness to their complaints.
The recent tragedy has amplified calls for urgent action. Residents demand immediate steps from PMC to improve road safety, enhance infrastructure, and deliver on the promises made at the time of the merger. The question remains: when will PMC address the long-standing grievances of Undri residents and provide them with the quality of life they deserve?
As more lives are disrupted, Undri’s residents are left wondering how many more such incidents must occur before the authorities act.
