Pune, April 4, 2025 — In a deeply disturbing incident, a seven-month pregnant woman lost her life after Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre allegedly refused emergency treatment, demanding ₹20 lakh upfront for admission. The delay in medical care, compounded by multiple hospital transfers in a private car instead of an ambulance, ultimately proved fatal.

The deceased, 30-year-old Tanisha (Monali) Sushant Bhise, was pregnant with twins and had been bleeding when her family rushed her to Deenanath Hospital around 9 a.m. on March 29. According to her family, Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas informed them that they needed to deposit ₹5 lakh before admission and arrange ₹20 lakh overall — ₹10 lakh for each baby.

Despite pleading with the hospital and offering to pay ₹2.5 lakh immediately, the hospital staff allegedly directed them to Sassoon General Hospital, causing Tanisha to panic. Even after requests from local leaders and calls from the Chief Minister’s Office, the hospital refused to admit her.

Tanisha was subsequently taken to Sassoon, but due to concerns over patient conditions there, she was moved to Surya Hospital in Wakad. There, doctors delivered twin baby girls by cesarean the next morning. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted again to Manipal Hospital in Baner.

Manipal Hospital confirmed that by the time she arrived, her condition was extremely critical. Despite intensive efforts, she was declared brain dead and succumbed to multi-organ failure at 11:58 pm. on March 31. The family believes the lack of an ambulance and the time lost moving between hospitals contributed significantly to her death.

“Deenanath Hospital specialises in maternal and cardiac care. If she had been treated there, she might have survived,” said the family.

Though she received emergency interventions the patient had suffered irreversible brain damage due to oxygen deprivation.

The incident has sparked outrage, raising serious concerns about the ethics of private hospitals demanding hefty payments before providing emergency care — especially when lives are at stake.

Deenanath Hospital remained unavailable for any comment on the incident.
