Pune: Woman Loses Leg After Dumper Hits Two-Wheeler Near Tathawade; Waited 30 Minutes for Help
Pune, July 3: A horrific accident near the Tathawade underpass in Pune’s Hinjewadi area has left a 37-year-old woman permanently disabled, highlighting once again the dangers posed by heavy vehicles in the rapidly growing IT hub.
The victim, identified as Swara Sanjay Pawar, was returning home on her two-wheeler with her son on Monday around 2 PM. A speeding dumper truck, coming from the opposite direction, rammed into their bike. The dumper’s front wheel crushed Swara’s left leg, pinning her under the vehicle. The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.
No Immediate Help, Delayed Rescue Eyewitnesses said Swara lay trapped under the dumper for over 30 minutes, crying for help. Repeated calls for an ambulance went unanswered initially, and onlookers were unable to lift the heavy wheel. Eventually, locals managed to free her using a JCB machine and rushed her to a private hospital in Thergaon.
By the time she reached medical care, her injuries had become critical due to excessive bleeding and infection. Doctors had no choice but to amputate her leg from the hip to save her life. Swara is currently stable and under observation in the ICU. Her young son escaped physical injury but is reportedly traumatized by the incident.
Helmet Saved Her Life According to doctors and family members, Swara was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. While this protected her head and prevented a fatal head injury, the loss of her leg has left her permanently disabled.
Recurring Issue of Unsafe Heavy Vehicles Residents of Hinjewadi, Tathawade, Wakad, and nearby areas say this is not an isolated incident. Complaints about reckless driving by dumpers and construction vehicles have been raised for years, but little has changed.
Common concerns in the area include:
- Over-speeding by heavy vehicles, even near residential complexes
- Poor traffic monitoring, especially during peak hours
- Inadequate ambulance and emergency response
- Congested and poorly designed roads lacking proper signage
- Hit-and-run cases involving negligent drivers
Police Action The Hinjewadi police have arrested later he was released after being issued a notice to join probe.
Locals are demanding stricter enforcement, including a daytime ban on heavy vehicles in residential zones.
What Needs to Change Following the accident, residents and local social workers have urged authorities to:
- Regulate dumper and heavy vehicle movement during daytime
- Improve emergency response infrastructure in Hinjewadi
- Install CCTV cameras and strictly enforce speed limits
The accident that left Swara Pawar disabled has once again exposed critical gaps in traffic management and emergency response in Pune’s IT corridor. Residents hope this tragedy will finally push authorities to act — before more lives are changed forever.
