Pune: Woman Molested On Lohegaon-Dhanori Road; Poor Lighting And Lack Of CCTV Raise Safety Concerns
Pune: In a deeply disturbing incident, a woman was molested on Lohegaon Road near the suicide lake in the early hours of July 13. The incident occurred between 1:00 AM and 1:15 AM as the victim was riding her moped home from the airport road.
According to the woman, an unidentified man on a motorcycle approached her, groped her while both were in motion, and then sped away into the darkness.
Traumatized by the ordeal, she highlighted critical gaps in the city’s infrastructure that made the stretch unsafe, including poor street lighting and the absence of CCTV cameras. “I have taken this road many times in the past without fear, but now I am terrified to use it again,” she shared in her complaint.
The woman attempted to file an FIR but was reportedly turned away due to lack of evidence such as CCTV footage or a clear description of the perpetrator. She has urged the authorities to take urgent action by installing functional streetlights, deploying CCTV cameras at strategic locations, and increasing police patrolling during late hours.
Residents and commuters echo her concerns, pointing out that Lohegaon-Dhanori Road has long been a dark and vulnerable stretch, particularly for women. The incident underscores growing fears about women’s safety in Pune, once regarded as a relatively safe city. Citizens now demand swift intervention to prevent such crimes and restore public confidence.
