The Pune Municipal Corporation has approved a tender worth ₹8.60 crore for the construction of a national memorial at Bhidewada. This decision clears the way for the foundation-laying ceremony of the memorial. The memorial will honor Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, who established the first school for girls in India at Bhidewada in 1848. The Bhidewada site, covering approximately 2.5 acres, had fallen into disrepair. Efforts to create a memorial have been repeatedly discussed, but progress was stalled due to legal challenges from tenants. The High Court had ordered fair compensation for land acquisition, which was upheld by the Supreme Court.

The construction will commence following the issuance of work orders and the ground-breaking ceremony. The memorial is expected to be completed within twelve months.

Following these rulings, the Municipal Corporation swiftly took possession of the site in December 2023, demolishing the dilapidated structure. The tender process was completed with the lowest bid of ₹8.60 crore being approved by the standing committee. The memorial’s design has been finalized, and the tendering process is complete.
