Pune, July 24, 2025: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) canteen, commonly referred to as the Refectory, is once again under scrutiny after a worm was reportedly found in a meal served on the night of July 22. This incident has reignited student outrage over recurring lapses in hygiene and food safety on campus.

Located near the Departments of Sociology, Chemistry, and Physics, the Refectory is one of the university’s main dining spaces, offering affordable meals to students and staff. However, complaints about poor food quality and unhygienic conditions have plagued the facility for over a year.

Videos circulating on social media show the contaminated food, sparking widespread criticism of the university administration. Students claim this is not a one-off incident and allege that despite multiple complaints, the university has taken no meaningful action.

“This is about our health and dignity. How long will they keep turning a blind eye?” asked a visibly frustrated student. There are now growing concerns over whether the canteen committee is deliberately overlooking these violations.

Earlier in May, a student found a piece of rubber in a meal from Route 93 Chinese restaurant located within the university’s food court. Similarly, in February, students from Boys’ Hostel No. 8 reported worms and cockroaches in their mess food.

Despite repeated complaints and disturbing revelations, the university has yet to issue an official statement addressing the issue or outlining corrective measures.

Students are now demanding urgent intervention and the establishment of a centralised kitchen with stringent hygiene protocols to ensure safe and healthy meals on campus.
