Police suspect family opposition to relationship drove minors to end lives
A disturbing case of suspected double suicide has emerged from Pune, where the bodies of a teenage boy and girl were discovered in a forested area near Khadakwasla Dam on Friday morning. Police say the couple had allegedly consumed poison, possibly driven by family opposition to their relationship.
The deceased girl has been identified as 16-year-old Akshara, a resident of Mahadev Nagar in Manjari, who had been reported missing for two days. Her companion, Santosh, also from Manjari but originally from Ravalgaon in Karjat taluka, district Ahilyanagar, is believed to have died alongside her.
Initial investigations indicate that the two were in a relationship that faced strong objections from their families. On Thursday, Akshara had left home saying she was attending classes but never returned. Her family filed a missing complaint at the Wanwadi Police Station the same evening, and a kidnapping case was registered.
While the investigation was ongoing, the Uttamnagar Police Station reported the discovery of two bodies in a wooded area near Khadakwasla Dam. Police Sub-Inspector Londhe and his team reached the spot and confirmed the identities of the deceased. Subsequently, the Wanwadi police were alerted.
Preliminary findings suggest the teenagers consumed a toxic substance. A mobile phone belonging to the boy was switched off, making it difficult for police to trace them earlier.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events. Both families have been informed, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Authorities are also probing whether any external influence or coercion played a role in the tragic incident.
