Pune: Youth Congress Protests Against Construction On BMCC Ground, Threatens Legal Action If Demands Not Met
Pune, 22 May 2025
Today, the Maharashtra Youth Congress staged a strong protest during the bhoomipujan (groundbreaking ceremony) at the BMCC ground. As the ceremony began, Youth Congress workers reached the venue, but heavy police presence prevented them from entering the grounds.
Subsequently, police called the management of Deccan Education Society to the gate. The situation became tense briefly. However, the Vice President and other officials of the society held a discussion with the Youth Congress delegation and assured them that their concerns would be presented positively before the Educational Council and the Management Council. They requested a time frame of 15 days to do so.
On this occasion, Akshay Jain stated clearly that until yesterday, the management claimed the ground would not be used. But after the protest began today, they issued a written statement saying only about 15% of the ground would be used. He emphasized that playgrounds in Pune city are rapidly declining and that there is no need to construct buildings on the grounds of reputed institutions like BMCC. The society has other acres of land available and should utilize that instead. Youth Congress is even ready to raise donations, but they will not allow even an inch of the ground to be used for construction.
Jain warned that if their demands are not met, the Youth Congress, along with BMCC alumni and local citizens, will launch a larger agitation. They are also prepared to approach the court if needed. Throughout the day, hundreds of alumni, CAs, artists, and sportspersons expressed their support via phone and stated they would also take to the streets if necessary.
Present at the event were Maharashtra Youth Congress (Media Department) President Akshay Jain, former Student Congress President Bhushan Ranbhare, Youth Congress State Secretary Anand Dubey, Meghshyam Dharmavat, Murli Budhram, Mahesh Mhetre, Sachin Bhosale, Harshad Hande, Sagar Dhadwe, Vishal Kamekar, Nishant Deshmukh, and others.
