Pune, August 15, 2025: The Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) has recorded steady growth in organ donations and transplants over the last three years, with 2025 showing a promising start, officials said.

Covering Pune, Satara, Sangli, Nashik, Solapur, Kolhapur, Jalgaon, and Dhule districts, ZTCC Pune has reported 49 brain stem death (BSD) donors so far this year, resulting in 131 transplanted organs. These include 71 kidneys, 41 livers, four hearts, nine lungs, and rare combined transplants such as kidney–pancreas, heart–lung, and kidney–heart.

In 2024, ZTCC registered 70 BSD donors and 181 transplanted organs, while in 2023, there were 58 donors and 158 transplants.

Despite the upward trend, transplant coordinators note that many potential donations are lost due to lack of awareness, delayed family consent, and medical constraints. “Every donor can save multiple lives. The growing numbers are encouraging, but Pune still has a long way to go to meet the rising demand,” said Arati Gokhale, central coordinator, ZTCC Pune.

Currently, the ZTCC waiting list stands at around 1,800 for kidneys, 800 for livers, 56 for hearts, and 18 for lungs.
