Pune: ₹558 Crore Plan to Ease Chakan Traffic; PMRDA to Develop 40 km of New Roads and Crack Down on Illegal Structures

In a major move to tackle the long-standing issue of traffic congestion in Chakan’s industrial zone, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has approved infrastructure projects worth ₹558 crore. The initiative includes the development of several key roads and strict action against unauthorized constructions obstructing traffic movement.
The projects, covering nearly 40.74 kilometers, have received administrative approval and are now in the tendering and technical evaluation stages. According to PMRDA officials, the goal is to improve connectivity between industrial areas and major highways, which is expected to significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks in and around Chakan.
The announcement came ahead of a planned protest march by the “Chakan Traffic-Free Action Committee” to the PMRDA office, which has now been deferred following the authority’s assurance of prompt action.
Key Road Development Projects Underway
PMRDA has initiated work on several major routes, including:
- Dhamane Phata to ZP School Koye – 2 km stretch, ₹8 crore
- Kohinde Phata to Kadus village – 5.6 km, ₹20 crore
- Kadus village to Kiwale – 5.5 km, ₹20 crore
- Bhose State Highway 55 to Vadgaon Ghenand – 1.2 km, ₹5 crore
- Kiwale to Ambethan – 0.89 km, ₹3.5 crore
- Dehu-Yelwadi Road – 2.5 km, ₹104 crore
Additionally, the state government has sanctioned ₹196.5 crore for 17.69 km of road development in Khed taluka, following a special directive from Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Upcoming Road Proposals in Tender Stage
Several other road projects are awaiting tender finalization, such as:
- Chikhli to Moi – 1.7 km, ₹13.42 crore
- Kuruli Phata to Nighoje – 2.5 km, ₹15.5 crore
- Pune-Nashik Highway (Alandi Phata to Alandi Road) – 4 km, ₹20 crore
- Chaholi Khurd to Alandi (Markal Road) – 2 km, ₹12 crore
- Nighoje to Chakan MIDC – 1.5 km, ₹6.72 crore
- Khalumbre to MIDC Phase 2 – 2 km, ₹12.5 crore
For easing congestion at Chakan Chowk, PMRDA has approved improvements on 17.7 km of roads at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore.
Land Acquisition and Connectivity Projects
Land acquisition has begun for several strategic routes, including:
- Talegaon–Chakan Highway (Phase 3, Hingane Chowk to Volkswagen Plant) – ₹24.65 crore
- Nanekarwadi (Sany Company to Samruddhi CNG Pump) – ₹33.4 crore
- Medankarwadi (State Highway 60 to Rase Phata) – ₹111.75 crore
- Western Bypass (connecting Pune-Nashik NH-60, Chakan MIDC Phase 5, and Talegaon MIDC) – ₹91.68 crore
These four projects together span 5.35 km and are valued at ₹261.48 crore.
Crackdown on Illegal Constructions
Alongside development, PMRDA has intensified enforcement drives in the Chakan area:
- Unauthorized structures demolished: 347
- Illegal billboards removed: 81
- Total actions taken: 428
Officials emphasized that once completed, these road projects will greatly improve mobility, reduce industrial transport delays, and enhance overall connectivity between Chakan, Talegaon, and major state highways.
