Pune: As Pune undergoes rapid urban expansion, the traffic police have raised concerns over the strain on road infrastructure, increasing congestion, and lack of planning. They have identified three major issues affecting mobility: unplanned road infrastructure, parking challenges, and the need for better public transport.
Traffic officials highlighted that road development is not keeping pace with construction, leading to bottlenecks, especially in growing areas like Baner-Pashan Link Road. Insufficient parking, encroachments, and restricted access for emergency vehicles further aggravate the situation.
Additional Commissioner of Police, Manoj Patil, emphasized the urgent need for improved public transport, suggesting higher parking charges and congestion pricing to reduce reliance on private vehicles. He advocated for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), which integrates residential and commercial spaces around transit hubs to promote sustainable mobility.
The police urged urban planners to prioritize transport infrastructure alongside new developments, ensuring that Pune’s growth does not come at the cost of worsening traffic conditions.
