Pune has taken a major step toward improving English proficiency in government schools with the inauguration of its first ‘English Room’ at Madhavrao Sonba Tupe School in Hadapsar. This vibrant and interactive learning space is designed to engage students in fun and effective English learning, featuring state-of-the-art tools such as a smart TV and digital learning materials.

The ‘English Room’ was launched by the Pehlay Akshar Foundation on Friday, with Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner (Education) of the Pune Municipal Corporation, leading the ceremony. The initiative is part of a broader effort to boost functional English skills and foster 21st-century competencies among students.

The room is designed to foster innovative teaching methods and activity-based learning. It boasts a carefully curated collection of educational resources that ensure students enjoy a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience. The curriculum, developed in-house, incorporates diverse teaching methodologies, such as interactive games, songs, flashcards, and theme-based discussions, to stimulate critical thinking and creativity.

Dubbed the ‘Magic Classroom,’ the space aims to create a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where both students and teachers can thrive. Radha Goenka, founder of Pehlay Akshar Foundation, emphasized the importance of nurturing students’ dreams and voices, breaking down educational barriers through English, a language that opens global opportunities.

In addition to the ‘English Room,’ the foundation is launching the ‘English Room on Wheels,’ a mobile resource box that will bring innovative learning materials to 10 other schools in Pune. This initiative is part of Pehlay Akshar’s ongoing efforts to enhance literacy and educational outcomes in government schools across rural, semi-urban, and urban areas.

According to the 2023 Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), a significant percentage of students in India face challenges in reading and understanding basic English, highlighting the urgent need for such initiatives.
