Pune’s ‘Grassland Safari’ Project Sets Benchmark for Eco-Tourism, Boosting Conservation and Local Communities

On December 23, the Pune forest department celebrated the first anniversary of its groundbreaking ‘Grassland Safari’ initiative, which has emerged as a model for eco-tourism. Over the past year, the project has generated ₹3,477,300 in revenue from 3,044 safaris, highlighting its popularity and success.

Launched in October 2023 as part of the forest department’s grassland management program, the initiative has focused on promoting conservation awareness, showcasing Pune’s unique grassland biodiversity, and uplifting rural communities.

Chief Conservator of Forests commended the initiative, stating, “The grassland safari is a remarkable example of how conservation and livelihood generation can go hand in hand. It not only showcases the ecological richness of our grasslands but also ensures direct benefits to local communities.”

The project has created indirect employment opportunities, supporting nearly 30 families and bringing stability and prosperity to the region. Deputy Conservator of Forests attributed the success to the dedication of the team and local participation, emphasizing that the safari has fostered goodwill among villagers.
