Pune: In a strategic move to decongest the heavily burdened Pune Junction, the Pune railway division is developing Hadapsar railway station into a full-fledged satellite terminal for long-distance trains. Several train services have already begun operations from Hadapsar, with more expected to shift in the coming months as critical infrastructure enhancements near completion.

The redevelopment is part of the Indian Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, under the supervision of the Gati-Shakti unit of the Pune division. The ₹135 crore transformation project includes the extension of Up and Down platforms to 600 metres—enabling them to handle 24-coach trains—along with the conversion of existing goods lines and the addition of a new freight corridor.

Other key upgrades involve the construction of a modern station building, expanded circulating area, parking facilities, and new water supply systems. So far, platforms 1, 2, and 3 have been extended, and passenger amenities worth ₹11.69 crore have been implemented. These include digital display systems, clean drinking water, upgraded waiting halls, and enhanced seating.

A senior railway official noted that the station is being developed to offer an airport-like experience, with planned features such as lifts, escalators, a 12-metre-wide foot overbridge, roof plaza, waiting and retiring rooms.

However, connectivity remains a concern. Unlike Pune Junction, Hadapsar railway station lacks efficient last-mile public transport. Daily commuters have raised issues about the scarcity of PMPML buses, shared autos, and the reluctance of rickshaw drivers to accept short-distance fares. The approach road also experiences traffic bottlenecks during peak hours.

To address these gaps, PMRDA and local bodies are collaborating to improve public transport links. Authorities believe that once operational by early 2026, Hadapsar terminal will significantly reduce pressure on Pune Junction and offer better train access for residents of Magarpatta, Amanora, Hadapsar, and other parts of eastern Pune.

The Hadapsar terminal project marks a pivotal development in Pune’s evolving urban transport infrastructure, reinforcing Indian Railways’ broader goal of future-ready and passenger-friendly stations.
