Pune's Wait For A Dedicated Dog Park Continues
Pune residents with pet dogs will have to wait longer for the city’s first dedicated dog park as the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) search for a suitable plot continues. The Central Zoo Authority’s (CZA) rejection of the initial plot in Katraj has led to a prolonged delay in the project.
The PMC had allocated a budget for the dog park in its 2023-24 budget and had selected a four-acre plot in Katraj. However, the CZA opposed the decision, citing concerns about the plot’s proximity to the local zoo and the potential risk of contagious diseases being transmitted to wild animals.
As a result, the PMC has been exploring alternative locations, including a 36-guntha plot in Baner. However, this plot is also being eyed by another civic department, creating confusion.
According to the veterinary department, the Baner plot is less than one acre, which means that not all planned amenities, such as veterinary services, can be provided. Despite this, the PMC is hopeful that the Baner plot can be converted into a pet park.
Meanwhile, the neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has already opened its first state-of-the-art dog park in February this year.
Citizens are eagerly awaiting the completion of the dog park project. Sushma Trivedi, a resident of Pune said, “A dedicated dog park is a great solution for both pet lovers and those who can’t get over their fear. Pets will get free space to roam without a leash, too.”
The PMC has received a letter from former minister Maneka Gandhi, urging speedy action on the project. With the demand for a dedicated dog park being high, the PMC is hopeful that the project will come to fruition soon.
